Daily Outfit Idea: What Do You Wear to a Modern Day Ball? 10 Inspiring Gowns From Save Venice 2012

Looking for outfit idea inspiration for a black-tie evening event coming up on your calendar—perhaps, say, a prom or a formal? Take a look at 10 of my favorite looks from from this year's Save Venice Ball, which lit up the night earlier this week in New York City. What do you wear to a modern-day ball, anyway? Find out after the jump.
The one and only time I ever went to a ball was back when I was still in school—a decade ago! Each college at my university would host elaborate all-night formal affairs every year (or every third year, depending), where the boys would dress up in tuxedos and the girls wore floor-length gowns (and sometimes gloves and masks—again, depending) and everyone ate and drank and danced until the sun came up. Not gonna lie, it was pretty awesome.
Here in New York, balls are fewer and further between—but the annual Save Venice Ball brings out some of the city's biggest socials, all in an effort to raise money to support the preservation of the artistic heritage of Venice, Italy.
Here are some of my favorite looks of the night—and ways to get the look... for less!
I love this swirling, sparkling, dramatic V-neck gown—it's a great style to consider if you want to wear a strapped bra underneath your gown and if you prefer to cover your shoulders.
Here are two gorgeous shades of pink—in two vastly different styles. On the left, there's a body-skimming loose blouson with a peplum and a floor-length straight skirt; on the right there's a flapper-inspired blush pink velvet number with a draped cowl neckline. Both are classic silhouettes that you can wear over and over again—it's the pink that makes 'em pop!
The detail on this backless, beaded, short-sleeve dress is stunning—and we're seeing this mid-back dip a lot in this summer's dresses. Do you love backless gowns? There's something really sexy about the combination of a high neckline and a gracefully dipped back, no?

Also, LOVING the super-flattering back detailing on this gold dress. The tip to take from this look is that a sparkling, body-hugging gold dress is, hands down a totally sexy Glamour Do!
In 2012, as far as eveningwear goes, white is the new, uh, black? White gowns are everywhere—and they don't look wedding-y... not in the least!
Sometimes, even though it's a blowout ultra-formal occasion, you might want to wear something understated and quietly elegant. I love this simple dress—it has an unembellished black bodice paired with a glittering floor-length straight skirt and a deco-inspired belt. Love it!

Here's how to make that Little Black Dress (or, um, major black gown) something you'll want to reach for over and over again—choose a solid black dress that has a beautiful, surprising detail. Like the tulle, above, or pleats, or a beautiful belt.
his dress is one of my favorite of the entire evening—and not just because it looks like a lot of fun to wear (it looks so light and flouncy!). The baby teal-blue pastel print is so sweet and so feminine—and so surprising for eveningwear! I love it.

What was your favorite look from the Save Venice ball? Which one would you wear yourself? What did you wear to prom? Tell us all your ball stories in the comments! I'm dying to hear them!

Google's Glasses of the Future: Would You Wear Them?

Growing up, everyone’s idea of what the future would bring was different, but I always imagined that we would one day have little computer screens installed inside our eyelids, so you could close your eyes and surf the web at the same time. Turns out, I might have been a bit of a child genius, because Google’s just unveiled a pair of glasses that basically does just that.
Dubbed the Google Goggles, the high-tech accessory flashes everything from maps to emails to locations of nearby friends on a tiny screen so that it looks like it’s being projected in front of you (at least, hypothetically—these are just a prototype by Project Glass, one of the “ideas” departments within Google).

According to the Daily Mail, there’s a built-in GPS system, so you could literally see arrows pointing you in the right direction, as well as camera and video functions for when you want to capture what you’re seeing ahead. Not to mention the fact that the glasses can be voice controlled, so you can also utilize Google Chat while you walk, work, or do anything, really. Think of all those times you’ve wanted to check an email while you were on a date, but didn’t want to be rude—now, you can do it guilt-free!
They even made a video to give you an idea of what one day in the life while wearing the Google glasses would be like

There is one little problem (besides the fact that we’ve probably got a few years to go until these land on shelves): they’re kind of ugly. Think of a cross between those wrap-around sunglasses perched on everyone’s forehead in the ‘90s and the headgear you were forced to wear as a kid to tame your overbite, and you’ve got an idea of what these puppies look like. You’d think Google, of all companies, would have had no trouble googling to find the name of an experienced accessories designer to help them out.

Bravo's New Fashion Reality TV Show Features Luxe LA Vintage Store Decades—And Tons of Major Designer Names!

Bravo just announced the newest show to join its reality TV line-up, and if you like fashion, like shopping, or like anyone who has ever rubbed elbows with Rachel Zoe, you’ll like this one. (Hint: It doesn't star Taylor Jacobson!)

As WWD reported this morning, the show will follow the co-owners of Decades, the Los Angeles vintage-to-the-stars boutique (Charlize Theron, Nicole Richie, and Selma Blair are all regulars). The title, for now, is just Decades, and it will start airing later this year. “The show will focus on shining the light on the rarefied and very specific part of fashion that we live in. We are curators and fashion arbiters,” said Christos Garkinos, one-half of the Decades duo.

But that’s not all: Garkinos and his business partner Cameron Silver want to parlay their screen time into something bigger. Having previously worked on design collaborations with places like Gilt.com, they’d also like to make like their Bravo predecessor, Rachel Zoe, and build a brand. “Our hope is that we continue with those types of collaborations because the idea of Cameron and I saying ‘supercute’ or ‘chic’ for the next 30 years is tiring. We very much want to be in a larger position than just having a store,” Garkinos told WWD.

Sure, everyone says they want to be the next Rachel Zoe. But if anyone could do it, it just might be these two. Why? It just so happens that they’re both friends with Zoe (Bravo even has photos of the super-stylist at a charity event held at Decades posted on its website). We know she’s not sharing the secret behind building a style empire with Brad Goreski or Taylor Jacobson, so maybe Garkinos and Silver will be the lucky ones.

Behold: The Kate Middleton Wall of Shoes at New York's Brand New LK Bennett Store

So Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton's favorite shoe store, LK Bennett just opened its first store in New York City—the brand previously opened US locations in Chicago, Atlanta, and Short Hills New Jersey.

I popped by yesterday to check out the new space—which is on the second floor of New York City's Time Warner Center, in case you want to visit!—and the powers that be told me that they have this wall, above, they've sort-of-secretly dubbed the "Kate Middleton Wall," because that's where all the shoes she's been photographed wearing are displayed.
Here's the breakdown...
Top row, left to right: The Shiloh shoe in black, dusty rose, and light taupe; the Sledge platform pump in bronze; the Juniper bag in pink coral; the Posy bag in gold; and the Sledge pump again in taupe, red, and black.
Second row, left to right: The patent Petal pump in black, salmon, and coral; the Sandy stiletto sandal in dark taupe; peep toe pumps in black and taupe; and lower-heeled Shilo pumps in black, latte, and taupe.
Third row, left to right: The Blythe shoe in black and latte; the patent Reno moc in latte; the Juniper bag, again, in light taupe; the Peony bag in red; and the low-heeled Bury pump in light taupe, coral, and black.
Bottom row, left to right: The Island sandal in tan; the Suki ballet flats in red, metallic pink, black, and leopard print; and the Sabine skimmer in lizard.

Is Marc by Marc Jacobs' High Heel Wedge Sneaker the Shoe of the Season?

So I haven't seen a shoe frenzy like this in, like, a million seasons—the Marc by Marc Jacobs high-heel wedge hi-top sneakers that made waves on the designer's spring runways last September have finally arrived in stores. And if you haven't already put your name down on the waitlist? Well, best get your tuchus down to your closest MMJ retailer asap, cuz the $320 shoes are definitely going to blow off shelves.

Ever since they debuted on the Marc by Marc Jacobs runway last September, people have been going nutso over these high-heel wedge sneakers. They've been spotted on the feet of Katy Perry and other boldface fashion names (@bryanboy has been tweeting about them for months!).

The shoes are available for $320 in solid red, white, blue, navy, as well as in two multi-color combos—on a white back ground or a blue base. They're available at Marc by Marc Jacobs stores and at other Marc by Marc Jacobs retailers around the country including Saks Fifth Avenue and Shopbop.com.
What do you think of these Marc by Marc Jacobs wedge sneakers? Do you love them or hate them? Are they your style? Would you wear them? Sound off in the comments!

Do or Don't: What's Up With Presidential Barbie's Shoes?

According to reports, Mattel is starting to take pre-orders for Presidential Barbie 2012 today—and, according to a statement by a marketing VP at the company, she "stands for inspiring girls to be informed and involved in their local communities." Know what else she stands for? Slingback wedges. Yeah, what's up with that?
Here's a head-to-toe of the Caucasian Presidential Barbie (it's the largest image I could find online)—the doll is also available in Latina, African-American, and Asian versions:

What do you think of the shoes? When you think of politicians, do you think of chunky hot pink slingback wedges? Am I the only one confused about this?

Banana Republic Fall 2012: Exactly What You're Going To Want To Wear Come September

I know we're all excited for springtime but let's take a moment to appreciate the awesomeness that is Banana Republic's fall 2012 collection.

When I first spotted this belted wool trench and neat little brocade pencil skirt at the presentation yesterday, I knew this collection was going on my fall "To Shop" list.

If you're not much of a black and gray girl, there were plenty of yummy camel and cognac shades layered up in the same way.

Some models combined the neutrals and carried red handbags for a pop of color. These simple looks are so Parisienne chic!

And then there were wearable yet head-turning dark red looks that were offset with black leather accents. Fierce!

The fierce factor also turned up by way of black leather skirts and dresses with a ladylike vibe. Leather was a big statement for BR back in the '90s and I'm excited to see them sticking with these trademark pieces.
So ladies, do you see some pieces here that you would wear? Are you a Banana Republic fan? Tell me in the comments!

Daily Outfit Idea: What to Wear to Work, Inspired by Tiffany Hines

Actress Tiffany Hines—you know her from Bones, 90210, and Nikita—attending last night's New York screening of The Intouchables. We loved her super-cute outfit—a totally work-appropriate printed blouse paired with a below-the-knee-length pencil skirt and peep toes. Here's how to get her look... for less!

Tiffany Hines is wearing a blue-and-navy printed silk blouse, a belted beige pencil skirt that ends demurely below her knees, and beautiful slate-gray peeptoe pumps.
Do you love Tiffany's look as much as we do? Tell us in the comments!

Karl Lagerfeld is Now Designing VIP Helicopters, Too

If they ever make a sequel to I Don’t Know How She Does It, I suggest they base it on Karl Lagerfeld’s life and call it I Don’t Know How He Does It—because really, I don’t. In addition to his duties with Chanel, Fendi, and his diffusion line Karl, and his stints editing Metro and making wine, he just announced his latest project: designing VIP helicopters. Does the guy ever sleep?!
The Anglo-Italian company AgustaWestland has hired the Kaiser to revamp their AW139 twin-turbine helicopters, according to the Daily Mail. He’ll be designing both the interiors and exteriors of the 15-passenger choppers, adding a bit of exclusivity to a mode of transportation that is admittedly already pretty elite. In a lot of ways, it’s a match made in heaven—or at least, made in the sky; we’re pretty certain that Lagerfeld is quite familiar with private travel, plus the fact that this particular model is described as having an “ample baggage compartment” seems perfect for the fashion icon.

This is just an outfit from Lagerfeld's newly launched Karl line...but could it one day be what flight attendants on his helicopters wear?
There is still one thing you’ll never catch him doing: flying the helicopter. According to the Daily Mail, Lagerfeld admitted to being less than accomplished behind the wheel. As he put it, “I haven’t driven since I was 18, and that’s a benefit to society because I ended up in a ditch, without knowing why!”

What would you want a Karl Lagerfeld-designed helicopter to look like? And what has Kaiser Karl not designed or collaborated on yet that you’d like to see? Let’s hear it in the comments!

Emmy Rossum and Camilla Belle are the New Faces of...Cotton!

What do Emmy Rossum and Camilla Belle have in common? Besides being really talented, stylish, and beautiful, they both apparently love their jeans and T-shirts, since they’ve just been announced as the new faces of Cotton Inc.
The new campaign for the company is dubbed “A Tale of Two Cities” and will feature the actresses in dueling roles. Rossum, who currently stars on the TV show Shameless, will be repping her hometown of New York in an ad that debuts this Monday, followed by a Los Angeles-centric spot featuring Belle. Previous ads have featured Zooey Deschanel and Kate Bosworth, both fashion icons in their own right.

Zooey Deschanel's Cotton commercial...so cute!
Here’s the interesting part: They’ve already announced what each woman is wearing in the ads! According to WWD, Emmy is filmed in a red cotton lace dress by Monique Lhuillier, a blue cotton jacket by Elie Tahari, a polka dot dress by Oscar de la Renta, and a sweater by Phillip Lim. (She’ll also be singing along to that famous jingle: “The touch, the feel of cotton….the fabric of our lives!”) Camilla, meanwhile, will be rocking a yellow and white cotton dress by Thakoon, a blue dress by Prada, and cotton skirt by Marc Jacobs, and a botanical print dress by Milly.
All that’s missing? A pop-up video component to the ads, so you can watch—and then buy what you’ve seen onscreen (kind of like this music video we reported on yesterday). You will, however, be able to poke around their closets; once the ad campaign launches, there will be behind-the-scenes footage, blogs, and multimedia tours on TheFabricOfOurLives.com.
Do you think that Emmy and Camilla are a good fit for Cotton Inc? If not, who would you like to see as a rep? Let’s discuss!

Front Roe: Revenge's Ashley Madekwe Talks Fashion Tips, Hair Extensions, and Cat Passports

Glamour's own Fashion Editor-at-Large Louise Roe sits down with Revenge star Ashley Madekwe. What did they talk about? Find out after the jump.

So, how on earth did I end up sitting down to interview Ashley for Glamour? Cue a really random turn of Twitter events. After recently getting a weeny bit obsessed with the show, I found myself sitting at the neighboring table to her at LA’s Chateau Marmont. I tweeted that I’d seen her later that night, someone else tweeted us into the same message, and hey presto, we got chatting.
As well as being a fellow Brit, she’s funny, sharp-as-a-tac, laughs easily and has impeccable style. The kind of wing-woman you want next to you on every shopping trip, bar stool and dance-floor.
So how does the is-she-isn’t-she evil sidekick in a drama, end up with better style than her on-screen best friend, leading lady Emily?
One answer might be Ashley’s genuine passion for all things style. She has an awesome fashion blog, Ring My Bell, which is well worth a scour.
“I started that ages ago," she says. "I get sent quite a lot of different pieces, which I’ll wear on there. I really enjoy it.”
And what about on the show? “I go for fittings every week," she admits. "The other actors go much less often—but I love to go in and I’ll try everything on. The costume designer Jill Ohanneson is just brilliant, we collaborate on Ashley’s looks. Emily’s character’s clothes are more pure and simple, she has to stick with a ‘good girl’ look, she has a bit of Grace Kelly in there.
"My character is this feisty London girl, and I wanted my style to be a mix of Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung," Ashley says. "She’s turned out to be more Olivia than Alexa though, because you never see Ashley in her down-time, so she’s always at work, dressed up and formal. But I’d love to change her hair color in the future, I want to go darker. And to take out the hair extensions—they’re so long! At the start of filming they were going to get me some very expensive ones made, but I love the clip-ins from HedKandi. They blend in really well, they’re so good. I’m the clip-in queen!”
Has life changed since being on a huge hit show?
“No, not really," Ashley says. "It often looks like an actor’s had a big break out of nowhere, but in reality they’ve been working their way up, little by little, for a while. So it wasn’t a huge change.”
Do you still get star-struck?
“Yes of course! I went to the Vanity Fair party on Oscars night and there were so many movie stars in that room," she says. "I stopped the Revenge boys from going up and chatting to any of those movie stars though, I wouldn’t let them!”
Any gossip from the set?
“We shoot it all in LA, not in the Hamptons," Ashley says. "I leave at 4 a.m. to drive down to the set at Manhattan Beach. We all get along really well, and often burst out laughing at the table-read, because the scenes are so intense and evil. Christa (who plays Daniel’s sister Charlotte) is probably who I’m closest with. We go out together in LA a bit.”
So what’s next on the agenda?
“I’m getting married this summer in London, and my dress is being sent to LA just a few days before I leave, so I hope it arrives on time. It better!”
On the guestlist?
“My ginger tabby cat Oscar—he’s got his own passport—he comes everywhere with me.”
And now, the Glamour Quick-Fire Round...
Louise: Heels or flats?
Ashley: Heels
Louise: Platform or Stiletto?
Ashley: Can I have both?
Louise: Leather or Lace?
Ashley: Leather
Louise: Maxi or Mini?
Ashley: Mini
Louise: Print or Plain?
Ashley: Print
Louise: Designer or Vintage?
Ashley: Both
Louise: Femme Fatale or Beachy Boho?
Ashley: Femme Fatale
Louise: LA or London?
Ashley: London
Louise: Team Daniel or Team Jack?
Ashley: "Ha ha I’d have to say Jack because Josh (Bowman, who plays Daniel) really cares about the competition! Something really sad happens to Jack too though.” (I gasp - does he die?? Nooo!) “No it’s ok! He doesn’t die, but it’s very sad.”
Ashley's Beauty Must-Haves!
· Shu Uemura oil cleanser and Dermalogica gel cleanser. “I like to double-cleanse, I use one after the other.”
· Boots No.7 serum
· Stila cream blush
· Nars Orgasm stick
· Shu Uemura hair oil “It’s so lightweight and really helps hydrate dead-ends, I dab it on all day.”
Ashley's Favorite Designers: Alexander Wang, Roksanda Ilincic, Jonathan Saunders, Valentino, Chanel
Ashley's Favorite LA Spots:
· American Rag for brunch: "You can shop for shoes and cushions and then eat brunch there too—they make the best eggs!"

· Cecconi's for cocktails: "It reminds me of London."

Christina Hendricks Talks to Conan About Mad Men Fashion: "It's a Little Bit of Work to Get Dressed"

Last night, the amazing Christina Hendricks appeared on Conan O'Brien to talk Mad Men fashion. What sartorial secrets did she reveal? Check out the video after the jump.

"Everything's incredibly authentic and meticulous," Christina Hendricks told Conan. "We have the full undergarments and the slips and then the thing over that. It's a little bit of work to get dressed."
As for her signature 1960s-era walk on the show?
"Well you put these thing on and they make you stand really upright and your body just naturally moves a certain way," she says. "I always thought that's what made that sort of walk happen—you put this undergarment on and this tight dress. My husband teases me and says that I walk that way at home as well."
So there you have it, ladies! Mad Men fashion is actually changing people's lives—and the way they walk!

Are you a fan of Mad Men's 1960s-era fashions? Tell us who your favorite characters are—and whose costumes you like the most—in the comments!

Every Time These Ladies Say Negative Things About Their Bodies, They Have to Put $1 In This Jar

You've heard of a curse jar—when folks agree to pop $1 in a communal container every time profanity escapes their lips—but have you heard of a negative-body-image jar?
The ladies at Stylelist are so fed up with hearing women around them talk smack about their own bodies—you know, we all do it, "I'm so fat," "My stomach is so big from lunch, I'm never eating again," and my personal favorite, "My calves are bigger than my neck!"—that they've created this body image smack talk jar.
Or, as they call it: the "I Promise To Stop Saying Negative Things About My Body Jar."

Writer Anya Strzemien explains how it works:
The fine is $1 for every negative comment someone makes, with proceeds going to Girls Inc, an organization that promotes self-esteem and leadership skills for young girls. Within two minutes I had $2 in that jar. Was one of them mine? Sure. I never said I don't have moments of hypocrisy! I am, however, trying hard to curb this nasty habit, and I hope you'll join me. A recent study shows that when a woman engages in "fat talk," she may feel the effects of depression for several weeks afterward. Talk about a lose-lose scenario.
What do you think about Stylelist's idea? Do you think using a body image jar like a curse jar would help cure you of your body smack-talking? Tell us in the comments!

These People in Phoenix Painted Their Carport in the Louis Vuitton Monogram

You know when you love a fashion brand so much, you want to paint your house in its logo? Yeah, me neither. But these folks in Phoenix, Arizona, totally know how that feels—they painted their carport in the Louis Vuitton monogram. Check it out after the jump.

The folks at Laughing Squid snapped this photo in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix. Check out more pics here!

Reminds me of the Louis Vuitton monogrammed house that was all over the internets back in 2010:

If you had to paint one of your largest belongings in a brand monogram, which monogram would you choose and which belonging would you paint? Me, I'd paint my front door in Margiela's Line 1 label (white with white stitching). I'd also be up for upholstering my sofa in monogrammed Chanel.

Actress Analeigh Tipton—you know her from America's Next Top Model and Crazy, Stupid, Love—was snapped at last night's Elie Saab dinner party wearing this super-sharp lipstick-red pantsuit with a sexy black lace top.

I'm loving the idea of dressing up a pantsuit—which is such a versatile thing to own because it can be worn as a full set to work, or separately on the weekend (with jeans or a sweater or cardi)—with a sexy lace top or blouse.
